Jan has studied art and design at two colleges and worked as a designer for the National Garment Company. After working in commercial design for a while, she went on to study fine art painting on her own. She discovered painting en plein air, and loved the ability to be outside or painting from life. Once exposed to this different world of art, and she never looked back. She continues to exhibit her work in juried shows, accepts commissions, and participates in plein air events and workshops, while studying online. Jan lives with her husband James, their dog Harvey, and three cats, Noir, Tux, and Ida.
Artist Statement I love to paint almost any subject that is in front of me. Everything is fun to see and explore with a paint brush. The changing light and the different seasons are awe-inspiring. Painting outdoors involves the excitement of becoming fully attuned to my surroundings. I have always loved the outdoors, so when plein air painting and I met in 2000, it just seemed to go hand in hand with my outdoorsy nature. Painting in plein air is challenging, as the light quickly changes. I started painting with Missouri Plein Air Painters Association, MOPAPA, which further inspired me to paint outdoors. Painting is a personal journey into the discovery of how beautiful the natural world is. I paint in an Impressionist way finding inspiration in any subject before me. As a painter I look for challenges, finding opportunities to express in luscious oil colors while designing the elements before me. I paint en plein air, but often take the ideas in the studio to expand larger works or finish the plein air piece in my studio. I paint in oils, watercolors and gouache, and am inspired by color, immediacy of the brush stroke, composition, and being surrounded by nature, cityscapes, and people. |
